SockBaby's Ronnie Cordova by KatCardy SockBaby's Ronnie Cordova by KatCardy
A quick fan art of Doug Tennapel's Ronnie Cordova from SockBaby (the official website seems to be down, so I'll link here for info for now, or you can search for the three episodes on youtube.com.

I pretty much just knocked this up quickly a few months back so that Ronnie could appear in our last Spectacular Spiderman issue we worked on. +50 points to anyone who can tell me which issue number and what page he appeared on ;)

TBH; I know the drawing/colouring isn't amazing, I just wanted to submit something to try out the new submission process ;)

I LOVE how the hands are drawn.

I'm trying to improve on drawing my cartoon hands. How do you go about drawing them, or do you just see it well enough to draw it without sketching it out first?

hey, thanks for the comment. :)
As for hands; they're always a tricky one, and I find they need to be practiced all the time to keep them in check, if I've had a break from drawing for a while the first palces it shows are hands and faces...
I'd say the best way to get really good at drawing cartoon hands is to actually draw loads and loads of hands from life; i.e; realistically. I've drawn literally pages and pages in countless sketchbooks of just loads of tiny little hand-studies (usually of my own hands), it's only when you really understand the form, construction, movement and proportions of real hands that you can start to confidently mess around with cartoonifying/simplifying and exaggerating them. :) Really it all comes down to understanding the basic construction, and then just practising! :)
-hope that helps! :)

Thanks a lot for responding! I took a figure drawing class last year and I just wish they spent more time on the hands.

But yeah, I'll definitely start doing that. It makes sense that in order to simplify, you must first know the real thing. Thanks a ton :D

no problem! and don't regret the omission of hands from your figure drawing class too much, since they're the easiest body part we can model for ourselves... -just sit down and draw your own hands for a few hours and you'll start feeling better already. :)
If you need some tips on de-construction (in order to understand the shapes and how the fit/work together) then Burne Hogarth has a very comprehensive book on hand-drawing, which has some great examples; [link]

check out episode 2 especially, there's an animation clippet which I pretty much just ripped off for this piece... - wanted to stay true to the style of that. :]

yeah not too bad thanks... half way through issue 17 of atom, but I've got loads of other little bits that I need to tie up this week too.. - I'm going home to england at the start of December so I've got a lot to do before then! How's things with you? How's the comic going? I keep meaning to pop over to your gallery to catch up but things have been hectic!

Ghahaha! Well, I'm now scetching the comic first, then I'm gonna send it to my beta-reader, then I'm doing the 'decent' line art and add some colours and send it to the writer, who will put some decent text in it :p

Even though this might take a while, I'll be posting the 'current progress' every now and then ;) *probably at the end of the week or so*

that sounds great! - sounds like you've got a good system worked out there, very similar to how it's done in the professional comics industury! :] - I'll be excited to see how the project progresses and evolves over time. :]
